Last morning we awoke at 8AM (A first!) and rushed out the door shortly thereafter, catching a bus to Istanbul's smaller airport. Once there, we met Sonia, a Slovakian friend of Jeremy's sister who decided on short notice to visit Istanbul for two weeks.
I am not sure what is inspiring such terror at breakfast. Probably Jeremy.
Not Sonia, but a similar look of horror I observed during the day.
This is a lesson for you: if ever you have the overwhelming urge to visit Istanbul on short notice, you can.
Most of that day was travelling and an unorthodox amount of sleeping (I progressed through some small novellas in the Turkish sun and breeze, which was quite nice). Towards the evening, we visited Moda, the park near the water I had taken some pictures of before. The sunset was absolutely gorgeous.
LOOK AT IT
JUST LOOK AT IT
Classy place to sleep, cat. Classy indeed.
After that walk, our group went to a fish restaurant.
I had never tried Sea Breem before. It was magnificent.
I promised Jeremy that I would post this picture. Let it stand as a warning to others.
Perhaps it was the Sardelles he had?
Sonia was quite taken with the spreads set out at the beginning of dinner. Alas, this vice proved too strong to resist, and she could not finish the main course.
After this amazing dinner, We visited the apartment again. Sonia needed to finish some work before she was truly free, so she stayed in. Jeremy took me to see the gigantic stadium nearby where Turkey vs. Belgium was taking place. The crowd was deafening as we approached.
Gigantic.
Even the side stadium thing is huge.
We eventually left the din of the crowd to join with some of the friends I had made of late. I finally had my camera on me at the bar, and so am able to document these great people for as long as the internet shall exist. Let us just say eternity, for simplicity's sake. (I did not seem to get a picture of Carl yet. Perhaps this is because I usually became engrossed in conversation with him when he was near me.)
Atakan and Roseann. I am glad that Jeremy happened to reconnect with them immediately prior to my arrival here.
THOSE EYES
(Left to right: Didem, Manta, and Mert)
That person behind us is named Ben. We met their table towards the end of the evening. He and another American, as well as an Australian, are living here.
(What did you think this picture was about?)
Jane and Ayhan. Good people. Ayhan comes from the southeast corner of Turkey, near Iraq and Iran. Jane comes from the UK.
I am judging you for not being here. Unless you are here. In which case, well done.
At some point soon I plan on talking a bit about the currency, language, and the bus system here. But not today. It is about noon, and Jeremy, Sonia, and I are about to leave for the European side.
Later!
